I tried two unusual Asheville Airbnbs: a mountain castle and a private retro arcade

I’ve now stayed in a mountaintop castle and a private retro arcade in the Asheville area. Apparently booking a normal room is becoming difficult for me. 😂

The castle was Windswept Castle at Earth & Sky Dwellings, about 10 minutes north of downtown Asheville. Stone walls, a turret, chandeliers, vaulted ceilings, and a loft. They really committed to the castle thing. I showed up without a crown, so that’s on me.

My favorite part, though? Those mountain views. With the big windows, you could just sit inside and take it all in. Even the little door peepholes reminded me of The Wizard of Oz.

Also, let me clear up the drive there. I went in September 2026, and the road up was paved and easy to get to. If you have a really low car, I’d check with the hosts about clearance first. Colder months could be a different story, so check the weather and road conditions. The hosts say you’ll need four wheel drive if there’s snow or ice.

I also didn’t realize just how many places Earth & Sky Dwellings has. Their website lists 20 different stays. Treehouses, Wizards Hollow, an earth home called Dragons Knoll, and a spaceship. Apparently staying on the mountain wasn’t enough. Now we’re leaving the planet. 😂

They’ve also got Mystic Village, with places styled around a potion parlour, a bookshop, and a broomstick shop. I went to look at one castle and came away with more places I want to stay.

Then there was the private retro arcade Airbnb in Asheville. Colorful arcade machines and that feeling of walking into an arcade as a kid, except this time I could stay there. Childhood me would have been very pleased with this arrangement.

The castle won me over with the views. The arcade appealed to the part of me that still gets excited seeing a room full of games. I enjoyed having something to explore right where I was staying.
