Touring the Hickory Aviation Museum in Hickory NC | Historic Military Planes

Image
Touring the Hickory Aviation Museum in Hickory NC | Historic Military Planes We recently visited the Hickory Aviation Museum in Hickory, North Carolina , and I really didn't know just how much there was going to be to see until we got there. Before we even walked inside, the place made an impression. The museum's new facility is huge, and on the day we visited we had blue skies with the mountains visible in the distance. The museum is located at the Dale Earnhardt Regional Innovation Complex and is connected with Catawba Valley Community College as an educational facility. The new Hickory Aviation Museum facility opened in May 2026, so when we visited in August it had only been open for a few months. And you don't even have to make it through the front door before seeing aircraft. The Planes Start Before You Even Get Inside One of the first things we came across was the massive Bell AH-1W SuperCobra . Standing underneath an aircraft like that is a completely different exp...

Hiking Bakers Mountain in Hickory NC: History, Humor and a View Worth the Climb

Image
Did you know that Bakers Mountain is the highest point in Catawba County, has rocks that may date back around 400 million years , and was reportedly used as a hiding place by Tories during the American Revolution? I didn't know most of that either when I headed out to hike it. I was mainly there to take on the Blue Trail, get a good workout, make my way to the top and hopefully end up with a beautiful view. Bakers Mountain Park is in Hickory, North Carolina, and Catawba County lists the mountain at 1,780 feet , the highest elevation point in the county. The park itself protects 189 acres of mature forest and has almost 4.5 miles of hiking trails that range from easier walks to some pretty good climbs. There is also a mountaintop observation area overlooking the Catawba Valley, which was exactly where I was trying to get. There are several trails to choose from, and I knew before I started that I wanted the Blue Trail . The Red Trail gives you another way around the mountain and ...

Mountain hiking is always hill-arious: Our South Mountain State Park Adventure! Join me while I summit the North Carolina Trail

Image
I originally wanted to see the big waterfall at South Mountain State Park, but the trail was closed. So, I thought the Chestnut Knob Overlook would be a great, easy alternative. Oh my gosh, I was so wrong. What I thought was a quick two-mile walk turned into a steep five-mile trek up the mountain. Plus, wearing a cotton t-shirt in 95-degree heat with crazy humidity was not my best idea. My legs were basically jello by the end. But honestly, it was an amazing adventure. I have been on a weight loss journey for a while, so I definitely got my heart rate up and got my steps in. I even had to team up with a trusty branch I named Mr. Stick to clear out all the giant spidey webs early on the trail. We saw some cute little lizards and salamanders, which makes sense because North Carolina actually has the largest variety of salamanders of any US state. If you ever go, just know it is a serious workout. South Mountain is North Carolina's largest state park, and the elevation goes from 1,20...

National Hot Dog Day History, Fun Facts, and a Fresh CoreniaBug Dad Joke

Image
There are plenty of national food days on the calendar, but National Hot Dog Day feels like one of the few that almost everyone can understand. You do not need a fancy recipe, a reservation, or even a plate if you are careful enough. You just need a hot dog, a bun, your favorite toppings, and possibly enough napkins to survive whatever you decided to pile on top. Naturally, CoreniaBug could not let National Hot Dog Day pass without getting involved. We brought out the hot dog costume, set up our own little hot dog stand, and added a brand new dad joke to the menu. I am not giving away the joke here because that would ruin the whole video, but I can promise that it is exactly the kind of joke that may make you laugh, groan, or question why you clicked in the first place. That is usually a successful CoreniaBug joke. I Made My Own 90s-Style Slime Memory Challenge

Image
I grew up loving the era of television when getting covered in green slime somehow looked like the greatest prize imaginable. Shows like Double Dare, What Would You Do?, Wild & Crazy Kids, Nickelodeon GUTS, Legends of the Hidden Temple, and Figure It Out made game shows feel larger than life. The sets were bright, the props were oversized, the crowds were loud, and there was always a chance that somebody would end up wearing a pie or an entire bucket of slime. As a kid, I never looked at that green slime and thought, “That must be terrible to clean up.” I thought, “Where do I sign up?” That old-school Nickelodeon feeling was the inspiration behind my newest CoreniaBug challenge: a 15-round memory game where every three mistakes led to another sliming. How the Slime Memory Challenge Worked The rules sounded simple at first. I would hear a group of words and then repeat them back in the exact same order. I started with three hearts. Every time I made a mistake, I lost one heart...

A Father’s Day Dad Joke To Make You Laugh And Groan

Image
Happy Father’s Day: Celebrating With A Classic Dad Joke Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandpas, and father figures out there. To celebrate, I’m dropping a classic dad joke because nothing says Father’s Day like a joke that makes you laugh and roll your eyes at the same time. Dad jokes may be cheesy, but that is kind of the whole point. They are simple, silly, and somehow always find a way to make the moment a little lighter. Father’s Day has a pretty meaningful history behind it. The holiday is often credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who wanted to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single father who raised six children. The first Father’s Day celebration connected to her efforts took place in Spokane on June 19, 1910. Even though people celebrated Father’s Day for years, it did not become a permanent national holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon officially recognized it. Today, Father’s Day i...

I made a 90s trivia pie challenge where I try to guess old shows, movies, toys, and random childhood stuff, but every wrong answer gets me hit with another pie.

Image
90s Trivia, Pie Challenges, and Those Messy Game Shows We All Remember I made a 90s trivia pie challenge, and honestly this whole thing came from the kind of shows I grew up watching where everything was loud, messy, colorful, and a little ridiculous in the best way. This was not meant to be some super serious trivia game. It was more like, what if I took 90s characters, cartoons, movies, toys, and random childhood memories, then mixed it with the kind of messy punishment you would see on those old Nickelodeon game shows? That is really the whole idea. Guess it right, survive. Guess it wrong, get pied. A big part of the inspiration comes from Double Dare, which first premiered on Nickelodeon in 1986. Marc Summers hosted the show, and it had that perfect mix of trivia and messy physical challenges. One second kids were answering questions, and the next second they were crawling through slime, digging through giant fake food, or trying to complete some wild challenge while the audie...

Inside the Mothman Museum: West Virginia’s Creepiest Legend, Strange History & My Point Pleasant Travel Vlog

Image
Exploring the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, WV: History, Mystery & My Travel Vlog Experience The Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, West Virginia is one of those places that feels part roadside attraction, part history stop, and part “okay… this is actually kind of creepy.” For my CoreniaBug travel vlog, I visited the museum to see the famous Mothman statue, learn more about the legend, and find out why this mysterious red-eyed creature is still such a big deal decades later. Whether you believe Mothman was a real creature, a warning sign, a misidentified bird, or just one of America’s best spooky legends, Point Pleasant has fully embraced the mystery — and honestly, that makes the visit even more fun. The Legend Begins in Point Pleasant The Mothman story really took off in November 1966, when two young couples reported seeing a large winged creature with glowing red eyes near an abandoned World War II munitions area known locally as the TNT Area. After that, more sightings ...

New River Gorge Bridge Walk Tour: My First CoreniaBug Travel Vlog

Image
New River Gorge Bridge Walk Tour: My First CoreniaBug Travel Vlog Adventure The New River Gorge Bridge Walk Tour was stop #1 on my road trip adventure and my very first CoreniaBug travel vlog . I started this trip in southern West Virginia at New River Gorge National Park , and let me tell you — this was not your average little stroll through the woods. I walked the full 3,030-foot length of the New River Gorge Bridge on a tiny 24-inch-wide catwalk tucked underneath the road, sitting about 876 feet above the ground . Yes, I was nervous. Yes, it was windy. Yes, I made dad jokes anyway. And yes… I actually dangled my feet over the edge. Watch the full vlog here: https://youtu.be/U1etrBQKdQw Getting Ready for the Bridge Walk Before stepping onto the bridge, we had to check in and get fitted with safety gear. Everyone wears a harness, and anything you bring with you has to be secured. Phones, cameras, and personal items can’t just be loose in your pockets because, well, dropping s...
