A Wild 90s Game Show Throwback: Our Messy Pie Challenge With Gummy Worms, Oreos, and Sardines
A Messy 90s-Style Game Show Challenge (Gummy Worms, Oreos & Sardines!)
If you grew up watching wild 90s game shows where contestants dove into slime, pies, and all kinds of crazy obstacles, then today’s CoreniaBug challenge will feel right at home.
In this episode, we decided to create our own retro game show challenge inspired by the classic messy competitions many of us remember from childhood. Instead of pies flying into someone’s face, we flipped the script — the contestants had to bring their face to the pie.
And inside those pies? Well… let’s just say the ingredients get a little interesting.
Our contestants for the day were Karina and Paul, and the goal of the game was simple:
Find as many hidden items as possible inside cream pies using only your mouth — no hands allowed!
Each round featured a different mystery item hidden inside the pie. Whoever collected the most items onto their plate would score points toward becoming the ultimate champion.
Let the chaos begin.
Round 1: The Gummy Worm Hunt
The first round started with something sweet: gummy worms buried deep inside whipped cream pies.
Contestants had one minute to dive in face-first, fish out the worms, and place them on their plate without using their hands. Sounds easy enough… until your goggles fog up and you accidentally drag your plate into the pie with your face.
Paul jumped out to an early lead with a clever strategy — attacking the pie like a bird hunting worms. Meanwhile, Karina struggled early on but quickly adjusted her strategy in the second attempt.
By the end of the gummy worm rounds:
-
Paul: 17 worms
-
Karina: 15 worms
It was already shaping up to be a close competition.
Fun Fact: The First Gummy Worms
Believe it or not, gummy worms didn’t exist until the 1980s.
German candy company Trolli created gummy worms in 1981, inspired by the popularity of gummy bears. They quickly became a hit because of their bright colors and playful design.
Today, gummy candies are one of the most popular sweets in the world.
Round 2: The Oreo Pie Challenge
Round two brought out the cookies.
Hidden inside the pies were chocolate sandwich cookies, and the contestants had two minutes to gather as many as possible using only their mouths.
By this point both players had developed strategies. Instead of random searching, they started sweeping their face across the pie and scooping cookies out one by one.
The results:
-
Paul: 14 cookies
-
Karina: 15 cookies
That extra cookie helped Karina close the gap.
Score after Round 2
-
Paul: 31
-
Karina: 30
Just one point separated them going into the final round.
Fun Fact: The History of Oreo Cookies
The Oreo cookie was introduced in 1912 by Nabisco, making it over 100 years old.
Today it’s considered the best-selling cookie in the world, with billions sold every year.
Round 3: The Sardine Showdown
The final round… got a little intense.
Instead of sweet snacks, the last challenge involved sardines hidden inside the cream pies. And just to make things interesting, extra sardines were placed on top of the pies as a bonus.
There was no timer this time.
The first contestant to collect all the sardines and yell “Done!” would win the round — and likely the entire challenge.
Let’s just say the smell alone made this the most difficult round.
Paul managed to power through the fishy chaos and claim victory, while Karina… struggled slightly with the smell.
And just like that, the judges declared the winner.
Paul took home the championship prize.
Fun Fact: Classic Messy Game Shows
Messy challenges like this one have a long history on television.
One of the most famous was Double Dare, which premiered in 1986 on Nickelodeon. The show featured obstacle courses filled with slime, pies, giant noses, and all kinds of wild challenges.
Another classic was What Would You Do?, which aired in the early 1990s and often involved messy stunts and silly challenges.
These shows became incredibly popular because they combined competition, comedy, and total chaos — something audiences still love today.
Why We Love Messy Game Shows
There’s something timeless about watching people dive into ridiculous challenges.
Messy games break down the seriousness of competition and replace it with pure fun. Whether it’s slime, pies, whipped cream, or sardines, the real entertainment comes from watching contestants react to the unexpected.
That’s exactly the spirit we wanted to bring into this CoreniaBug challenge.
Could You Beat This Challenge?
The real question is… could you do it?
Would you be brave enough to dive face-first into a pie to hunt gummy worms? Or scoop sardines out of whipped cream without using your hands?
If you think you could win this challenge, let us know — maybe we’ll invite you to compete in the next CoreniaBug game show.
