🥃 The Water of Life: A Blind Date with 8 Whiskeys

Happy International Whiskey Day! 🥂 Did you know that the word "whiskey" actually comes from the Gaelic phrase uisce beatha, which literally translates to "Water of Life"? Well, today I’m testing just how much "life" my taste buds can handle with an epic 8-bottle blind taste test!

Before you jump into the video to see me struggle (and trust me, there is struggling), I wanted to share some of the coolest things I learned while prepping for this high-stakes "Whiskey Business."

🧠 Mind-Blowing Whiskey Wisdom

  • The Angel's Share: Ever wonder why whiskey barrels aren't full when they're opened? About 2% to 4% of the alcohol evaporates every year it sits in the barrel. Distillers call this the "Angel’s Share." I guess the angels have a pretty good time up there! 👼💨

  • Bourbon vs. Whiskey: It’s the ultimate bar debate. Remember: All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. To legally be called Bourbon, it must be made in the USA, consist of at least 51% corn, and be aged in brand-new charred oak containers. 🌽🇺🇸

  • The Oldest vs. The Newest: We have a massive range in our lineup. From Old Bushmills (granted the first license to distill in 1608!) to Maker’s Mark, which is actually the "new kid" on our list, selling its first bottle in 1958.

  • Tabasco’s Secret: Here’s a wild one—the pepper mash for Tabasco sauce is actually aged in used Jack Daniel’s barrels for three years before it hits your eggs! 🌶️🔥

🧪 My Testing Method (Don't Try This at Home!)

I went into this challenge with a strategy: Smell, Sip, and Second-Guess. I was looking for "depth vs. shallow" notes and trying to find that "nostalgic" college burn. I even used a Dolly Parton Dixie Stampede boot for the final tasting because, let’s be real, everything tastes better out of a glass boot. 🤠👢

🏆 The Challenge

The goal was simple: Match the brand to the glass. The reality? Let’s just say my "house whiskey" palate was humbled. I found out that what I thought was a Scottish lawyer's premium blend might actually be a budget-friendly staple!
